Frieren is the main character and protagonist of the manga and anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sōsō no Frieren). She is a powerful elven mage who was a member of the “Hero Party,” a group of adventurers who, after a decade-long quest, defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the world.
What makes Frieren a unique protagonist is that the story begins after the great quest has ended. Here’s a description of her character:
An Immortal’s Perspective on Time
As an elf, Frieren has an incredibly long lifespan, having lived for over a thousand years. This long life has given her a skewed and detached perspective on time. To her, a decade is a fleeting moment, and the ten years she spent adventuring with the Hero Party—Himmel, the human hero; Eisen, the dwarf warrior; and Heiter, the human priest—were just a small blip in her existence.
Because of this, she was initially indifferent to the passage of time and the short lives of her human companions. She often didn’t grasp the significance of their small, everyday moments together.
The Journey of Reflection and Regret
The central narrative of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is Frieren’s emotional and philosophical journey after the death of her former comrade, Himmel. Fifty years after their quest, she reunites with her old party for one last time to view a meteor shower. Shortly after, Himmel dies of old age. At his funeral, Frieren is confronted with a profound sense of guilt and regret for not having truly understood or cherished the time they had together.
This realization spurs her on a new journey. She decides to travel to the northern lands to the resting place of souls, where she believes she can see Himmel again and express her feelings. This new quest is not about defeating a new evil; it’s a deeply personal and reflective adventure to understand humanity and the value of a brief, mortal life.
Personality and Traits
Stoic but with Eccentricities: Frieren can appear stoic, detached, and even apathetic, but she has a number of quirky traits. She has a deep fascination with collecting all kinds of magic, no matter how trivial or useless, such as a spell that turns grapes sour or a magic that allows her to look for stray objects.
Incredibly Powerful Mage: Despite her seemingly nonchalant demeanor, Frieren is an ancient and immensely powerful mage. She possesses a vast knowledge of magic, including the ability to suppress her magical power to deceive her enemies.
Developing Empathy: Throughout her new journey with her new party (her human apprentice Fern and the warrior Stark), Frieren slowly begins to shed her detachment. She revisits places from her first adventure, triggering flashbacks that highlight her old party’s words and actions. Through these memories and her new experiences, she begins to appreciate the bonds she formed and learns to value the connections she’s making now.
“Frieren the Slayer”: Her past reveals a much more ruthless side to her character. Before joining the Hero Party, she was known by demons as “Frieren the Slayer” for her cold and efficient approach to eliminating them. This history is a stark contrast to her often-carefree present, but it highlights her evolution as a character.
